Bronco 60th Roadster Concept
As a part of the Bronco 60th birthday celebration, our design team wanted to pay homage to the original Bronco, the 1966 U13 Roadster. Choosing this original as our inspiration, we took the approach of “turning the 6G into an OG” - taking the current-generation Bronco and stripping it back to the core essence and spirit of the original Roadster.
Drawing inspiration from a vintage ‘66 in Wimbeldon White, we worked to reduce the contemporary Bronco into something more simple, open air, and elevated. The less-is-more approach resulted in a pared-back, while still bold homage to the original.
On the exterior of the vehicle, our Design leadership challenged us to maintain the key aspect of the Bronco: the compelling simplicity. So we took a strong addition-by-subtraction approach, choosing to remove the roof and doors all together, just like the original. For the wheels, we sourced machined Fifteen52 Analog wheels, and built a brand-new tailgate with a fold-down design, and “FORD” logo stamped into the metal. Custom bumpers were a nice tribute to the original aluminum parts and tied in with the interior seating (and the custom laser-etched vanity plate on the back).
Speaking of the interior, we took the current Bronco seats and reduced the internal structure and padding to mimic the original, wrapping them in a retro-inspired silver vinyl for that authentic look, plus retro chrome lap belts for that old school feel. Flooring was reduced and pared back to simple body metal, and we kept the the rear compartment utilitarian and simple to tie back to the original design lines. and the current Bronco navigation system integrated seamlessly with a retro-inspired dashboard upholstery, custom vinyl-wrapped handles, and retro manual shift knob to tie the whole thing together.
We decided to color wash the interior and exterior with our classic semi-matte Wimbledon White paint - to celebrate the spirit of the OG, and tie in with our inline 60th anniversary package. We carried this color through the grill lettering and even into the gas can. To add a little modern flavor, we hit the custom rear fenders and tailgate with some metallic red accenting (as well as the FORD letters on the back).
The result is a true modern retro, and while it may not be the most street-legal vehicle, it’s been great to be a part of the Bronco legacy and story, and to see everyone’s reaction to this vehicle as it appears at events all over the country.
